Christ returns to 16th-century Seville during the Inquisition. The people recognise him and he performs miracles. The Grand Inquisitor has him arrested and visits him in his cell at night.
"Mankind cannot bear freedom. We corrected your work. We gave them miracle, mystery, and authority. They are happy — as long as they obey us. You gave them freedom; we gave them bread."
Christ says nothing. He kisses the old man gently on the lips. The Inquisitor is shaken but releases him, saying: "Go, and come no more."
